Ghostwriter

Privacy. Short, because there is little to say.

Last updated October 14, 2026

The app

Ghostwriter runs its language model on your Mac. What you type is read, completed and stored on your Mac only. It has no cloud service, no account, no analytics and no telemetry, and its developer has no server that receives your data.

  • It connects to the internet for two things: downloading the model you choose from Hugging Face, and checkingmshll.github.io for updates. You can turn off update checks in Settings > Updates.
  • It never records text from secure fields, password managers or apps you exclude.
  • Your recorded writing, snippets and statistics are in one database file on your Mac. Settings > Privacy & Data shows it, and you can erase it there.
  • If you allow Screen Recording, a screenshot of the window you type in is read in memory when an app hides its text, then discarded at once. Screenshots are never saved.
  • Actions for selected text use Apple Intelligence on your Mac. Apple’s own privacy terms cover that framework.

Ghostwriter is open source, so you do not have to take this on trust: read the code.
