Questions.

Is it really free?

Yes. It is free software under the GPL-3.0, with no account, no paid tier and no trial.

Does it fix typos on its own?

Only if you turn on auto-fix in Settings. It then fixes clear typos as you type in English, French, German and Spanish, and Delete right after undoes the fix. Otherwise a fix waits for Tab.

Suggestions don’t appear in an app.

Some web and Electron apps hide their text. In Settings > Apps, turn on Improve compatibility for that app, or allow Screen Recording so Ghostwriter can read the window. In fields where suggestions don’t start on their own, press Control Grave accent.

Does it use Apple Intelligence?

Only to rewrite or proofread text and for the {ai: …} snippet placeholder. Autocomplete runs its own model, which is faster and more accurate for this.

How much battery does it use?

On battery, in Low Power Mode or when the Mac is hot, it does less work. It can also give shorter suggestions or switch to a smaller model on battery.

Why only Apple silicon and macOS 26?

The model runs on the GPU through Metal, which needs Apple silicon to keep up. macOS 26 brings the Foundation Models framework.
